Save Your Sight
Diabetic eye exams are available at your primary care visit
If you have diabetes, clinical guidelines recommend annual retinal eye screening as an important part of managing your health. Our practice offers diabetic retinal exams right in your primary care office using RetinaVue® technology—quickly, comfortably, and without eye dilation. This screening may be completed during your primary care visit, depending on availability.
Early identification allows for appropriate follow-up and treatment when needed.

If you have diabetes, ask your provider or care team about a diabetic retinal exam at your next visit or when you call our office. Your eyes matter. Early detection can help save your sight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Is Diabetic Retinal Screening Important?
Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue in the back of the eye, a condition called diabetic retinopathy. Up to 80% of individuals with type 2 diabetes will eventually develop some stage of diabetic retinopathy. It often has no early symptoms, but if caught early, treatment can reduce the risk of vision loss by up to 95%.

What Is a Diabetic Retinal Exam?
This exam uses a special camera (RetinaVue®) to take photos of the back of your eyes to check for signs of diabetic retinopathy.
What patients like most:
- No eye drops or dilation
- No blurry vision afterward
- No driving restrictions
- No recovery time required
- Takes about 10–15 minutes
Can I Have This Done The Same Day as My Scheduled Appointment?
Often, yes!
If staffing allows, this exam can usually be completed during your regular primary care appointment. In some cases, it may be scheduled separately. Our providers may offer this exam—but you can always ask for it, too.
Is This the Same as an Eye Doctor Visit?
No. This service is a screening exam, not a comprehensive eye examination. This exam:
- Screens specifically for diabetic retinopathy only
- Does not evaluate vision or other eye conditions
- Does not replace a full eye exam with an eye doctor, but it is an important part of diabetes care.
- Is quick and non-invasive
- Is done in your primary care office
Who Reviews the Images?
Your images are reviewed by trained clinical staff in accordance with established clinical protocols. Results are documented in your medical record and shared with your provider.
If anything concerning is found, your provider will talk with you about next steps, including referral to an eye specialist if needed.
Is It Covered by Insurance?
Most insurance plans cover diabetic retinal exams. Please note: straight Traditional Medicare may not cover this service. Our team can help answer coverage questions or you can ask your insurance company.
Who Should Have This Exam?
✔ All adult patients with diabetes—every year, unless otherwise directed by your provider. Even if your vision feels normal.
Diabetic retinal screening is a screening service and not a diagnostic examination. Availability, insurance coverage, and follow-up recommendations vary based on individual circumstances.
